Jim Gaffigan is known as one of the most recognizable stand-up comedians of our time. He’s also an author, voice-over artist, actor, and writer. He’s currently dotting the globe on his Fully Dressed comedy tour, has four Netflix specials, has written two New York Times-best-selling books, and is starring in two upcoming dramas, The Bleeder opposite Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber, and the Ted Kennedy biopic Chappaquiddick.
But that’s not the reason he’s managed to endear himself to his legion of fans. Although he’s had a wildly successful career, his biggest accomplishment, according to Jim himself, is his family. He and his business partner and wife Jeannie have five children. Five children all under the age of 12. Lucky for all of us, his children routinely make it into his stand-up act. In what is one of my favorite jokes of all time, he sums up what it’s like having a large family by saying, “You know what it’s like having a fourth kid? Imagine you’re drowning, then someone hands you a baby.”
I have three kids myself and that joke almost makes me want to have another one just to be able to use it.
Jim talked to Babble about his role of father and how he and wife Jeannie manage to juggle it all. Below are some of the highlights, along with 12 of the many reasons we all love him.
1. On how key a sense of humor is in parenting:
“A lot. I mean, you are constantly navigating. It’s like living with a cave person most of the time so you have to have a sense of humor. You have to be able to laugh at yourself.”
2. On co-sleeping:
3. Explaining his kids … to his kids (from his book Dad Is Fat):
“You’ve been a constant source of entertainment while simultaneously driving me insane.”
4. On limiting screen-time:
5. On how he and his wife maintain a strong relationship:
“We’ve only known what it’s like to work together, so we are used to being in each other’s business. It’s nice to be able to create something together.”
Whatever it is they are doing, it’s working.
6. On traveling with kids:
7. On the notion of “having it all” for two working parents:
He and wife Jeannie ended their series The Jim Gaffigan Show after two seasons. “For us, the decision was easy. The production schedule was too much to ask while the kids are so young. The time away from the kids was just too much. You only have your kids for such a short time.”
I didn’t think it was possible to love him more.
8. On maintaining his dad bod:
9. The parenting invention we all need:
10. On passing on his humor to his kids:
11. On spending time alone with his kids:
12. On women (from his book Dad Is Fat):
“But truly, women are amazing. Think about it this way: a woman can grow a baby inside her body. Then a woman can deliver the baby through her body. Then, by some miracle, a woman can feed a baby with her body. When you compare that to the male’s contribution to life, it’s kind of embarrassing, really.”
Jim, whatever it is you do next, we have no doubt you will be wildly successful.
